The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office is asking the community’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a bicyclist and — fire officials report — a person who tried to help him in Moyock early Sunday.
The sheriff’s office says the car, believed to be an older-model Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound in the 600 block of Caratoke Highway when the driver struck a bicyclist at 1:51 a.m.
Fire officials say the bicyclist and a person who tried to help him were both killed. The sheriff’s office was not immediately available for clarification and did not elaborate on the deaths in a Facebook post, saying only the incident resulted in “fatalities.”
The driver then pulled into Moyock Commons and fled the area northbound towards Virginia on Caratoke Highway approximately two minutes later.
Based on surveillance footage, the car appears to be a 1992-1996 Toyota Camry silver or gold in color, the sheriff’s office said. The car sustained damage to the driver’s side headlight, driver’s side hood, and appeared to have a crack the driver’s side windshield.
The driver’s side mirror popped out but the housing remained on the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
The car is possibly registered in Virginia based on a possible front plate and the driver appeared to be a white male, but that was not confirmed.
