State transportation officials are inviting people to a virtual information meeting Sept. 3 on the ongoing Rodanthe “Jug Handle” Bridge project.
The bridge is expected to be a long-term transportation solution for erosion and ocean overwash near the “S” turns on Hatteras Island. The N.C. Department of Transportation is raising the highway onto a 2.4-mile bridge that extends over Pamlico Sound between the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and Rodanthe.
The bridge is due for completion in the fall of 2021.
The virtual meeting comes in the aftermath of an Aug. 24 construction accident that claimed the life of bridge worker Steven “Bull” Bailey, who died after being pinned by a crane. Thursday’s meeting will be held from 6-8 p.m. NCDOT officials and project engineers will provide an update on the project’s progress and answer questions.
