Strong winds, minor soundside flooding as front crosses Outer Banks on Saturday


A strong cold front that will move across the region on Saturday will have the potential to bring severe weather, very strong winds, and minor coastal flooding.

The Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service said Thursday morning that strong wind gusts up to 45-55 mph are expected along the coast.

Minor flooding is possible, especially along the normal trouble spots soundside of the Outer Banks, from Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

Severe thunderstorms that could produce damaging winds are possible, bringing the potential for scattered power outages. Some of the storms could produce an isolated tornado.

A Gale Watch is in effect for the Pamlico Sound for southwest winds of 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 45 knots, becoming northwest Saturday night, and resulting in extremely rough waters.

Rain likely, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 50. North wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
A chance of rain before 7pm, then a chance of showers between 7pm and 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 46. North wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming east in the afternoon.

Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 4am. Low around 52. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south 12 to 17 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
