Dare County reported 57 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, pushing the overall total number of residents to have contracted the virus since last March to 1,515.
While the death toll in North Carolina from COVID-19 passed the 8,000 mark on Saturday and hospitalizations remain above 3,800, indications are new cases statewide have started to trend downward after the post-holiday peak.
Although Sunday’s update on the coronavirus from Dare County Department of Health and Human Services was one of the highest single days of the entire pandemic, the numbers reflect two days of reporting.
Health department staff were working the vaccination clinic at the Fessenden Center in Buxton on Saturday, and the dashboard was not updated.
Guarded optimism has been expressed about recent slight decreases in daily new cases, percent positives and hospitalization in North Carolina, along with vaccinations starting to ramp up.
Dare County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Sheila Davies told us Friday on OBX Today on News Talk 92.3 WZPR that everyone still needs to remain vigilant about trying to prevent the spread and that any recent trends may only be temporary.
“I’m hoping that over the next few weeks we’ll see…that drop,” Davies said. “What we are seeing now is a trickle effect of folks that were at a gathering that unknowing contracted the virus and then they are back in their home.”
“We should still prepare ourselves for a couple of rocky weeks ahead,” Davies said.
