Overwash at high tide caused by strong southerly winds this morning has closed N.C. 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island, and suspended ferry service across Hatteras Inlet.
The N.C. Department of Transportation reported the closure between the south ferry and the pony pens is expected to last all day and into this evening through the next high tide, which is around 8 p.m.
A high surf advisory is posted for the south-facing beaches from Buxton to Ocracoke, as a low pressure system moves through North Carolina today.
Due to ocean overwash, NC12 on Ocracoke has been CLOSED between the ferry terminal and the NPS Pony Pens. Overwash is expected to continue through the day today. On Hatteras, NC12 is OPEN, but there are several areas of deep standing water due to rain. Please drive carefully. pic.twitter.com/fcTfVqQ0mq
