A rental cottage at a lower Currituck County golf course community was heavily damaged, while firefighters were able to prevent a second house from being seriously damaged by a fire Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze in the 100 block of Masters Drive near the entrance to the Kilmarlic neighborhood in Powells Point at 5:41 p.m., according to Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department Chief Vernon Hart.

The first house was fully involved when crews arrived four minutes later, and was damaged significantly. Damage to the second house was limited to the exterior siding from the intense heat of the nearby blaze.

No one was inside the rental properties at the time of the fire, Hart said. No injuries were reported.

Crews from the Crawford Township, Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk fire departments and Currituck Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
