Duck Fire Department appoints Matthew Dudek to the position of Deputy Fire Chief – OBX Today

The Duck Fire Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Matthew Dudek to the position of Deputy Fire Chief, effective immediately. With more than 25 years of experience in the fire service, Deputy Chief Dudek brings a wealth of expertise, leadership, and dedication to this important role.

In addition to his new position as Deputy Fire Chief, Deputy Chief Dudek will also serve as Acting Fire Chief during the transition of Fire Chief Donna Black to her new role in Washington, D.C., as Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator. Chief Black’s appointment to the federal position marks a significant achievement, and while she transitions to this new national role, Deputy Chief Dudek will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Duck Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Dudek began his career in the fire service as a volunteer with the Virginia Beach Fire Department while on shore duty with the United States Navy. He later moved to upstate New York, where he served for more than 20 years with the Troy, NY Fire Department, ultimately retiring as a Captain.

After his retirement, Deputy Chief Dudek and his family relocated to Southern Shores, realizing their long-time dream of returning to the coastal region. He subsequently joined the Southern Shores Fire Department as Deputy Fire Chief, where he made significant contributions to both the department and the community. Additionally, he served as the Dare County liaison for the College of the Albemarle (COA), assisting in the development and delivery of fire training and certification programs across the region.

Deputy Chief Dudek holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire and Emergency Management from the State University of New York and a Master’s Degree in Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School.

“We are fortunate to have Matt Dudek step into this critical leadership role as Deputy Fire Chief and Acting Fire Chief,” said Fire Chief Donna Black. “His extensive experience, strong leadership skills, and unwavering commitment to public safety will ensure the continued success of the Duck Fire Department as I transition to my new role. I have full confidence that Deputy Chief Dudek will provide the guidance and leadership needed during this period of transition.”

Deputy Chief Dudek looks forward to working closely with the dedicated team at the Duck Fire Department and is committed to maintaining the high standards of service that the community has come to expect.
