USACE to perform response action at Buxton FUDS – OBX Today

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will deploy a team this week to the Former Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Site property located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Dare County, North Carolina.  This team is being sent in response to recent reports of additional fuel sheen and odors in the area and will monitor the site and take limited response actions if a petroleum release is observed.

“We are committed to the safety of the community. Together with our federal, state and local partners, we’re going to find the contamination, and we’re going to remove it,” said Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, USACE commanding general.

The team will also collect additional data, which will support a subsequent contract action. The contracted interim action will involve removing contaminated soil from the beach, and confirmation samples will be taken to verify that clean soil has been reached. These actions will not affect the planned Comprehensive Sampling Project that is scheduled to be awarded in October 2024.
