At approximately 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Bluefish Ct in Grandy concerning an unresponsive 3-week old child, Declan Merritt. The child was transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City where he later passed away.
Consequent to a continued investigation by the CID/NARC divisions, Brittany Nixon and Cameron Merritt were arrested and charged with the death of Declan Merritt on Thursday, August 29th, 2024.
Brittany Nixon, 35, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Child Abuse. She was confined at the Currituck County Detention Center under a $500,000.00 secured bond.
Cameron Merritt, 28, was charged with Felony Child Abuse. He was confined at the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office under at $250,000.00 secured bond.
