Susan Sawin, Chair of the Dare County Democratic Party and owner of Island Bookstores, announces her candidacy for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 1 seat with a campaign kickoff event scheduled for April 25, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Waveriders Coffee, Deli and Market.
With a deep-rooted commitment to serving her community, Sawin’s decision to run stems from her profound concerns about recent legislative trends in Raleigh. She voices her dismay at legislation that diverts funding from public schools, encroaches upon women’s reproductive rights, and favors special interest groups over the welfare of citizens.
“I am both disgusted and alarmed at the legislation coming out of Raleigh in the last year,” Sawin stated. “It’s time for change. Our district deserves a representative who will fight for accessible education, reproductive healthcare rights, and equitable resource allocation.”
Sawin emphasizes the pressing need for legislative initiatives that address the socio-economic challenges faced by residents of northeastern North Carolina. House District 1 encompasses the northern half of Dare County, as well as Currituck, Perquimans, Chowan, Washington, and Tyrrell counties. Sawin points to dwindling economic opportunities, outmigration, and declining access to essential services like education and healthcare as critical issues requiring immediate attention.
“It’s clear that our communities are facing significant hardships,” Sawin remarked. “As your state representative, I am committed to championing policies that prioritize the well-being and prosperity of all constituents in our diverse district.”
Sawin, a native of the Outer Banks, brings a wealth of experience to her candidacy. Prior to her entrepreneurial pursuits as a bookstore owner, Sawin served as a school librarian at First Flight High School. She also worked as an attorney in Raleigh before returning to her roots on the Outer Banks.
“I am deeply rooted in this community, and I understand the challenges that our district faces firsthand,” Sawin affirmed. “With your support, I am confident that we can enact positive change and build a brighter future for northeastern North Carolina.”
