Thunderstorms possible Friday through Saturday – OBX Today


The National Weather Service says strong to severe thunderstorms, strong winds, dangerous marine conditions, and minor coastal flooding are to be expected for Eastern N.C. Friday evening into Saturday.

Conditions begin to deteriorate Friday evening, with severe weather possible between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. Strongest winds and minor coastal flooding risk will be overnight Friday.

Hazards and impacts are as follows:

Strong Storms – Strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible ahead and along the cold front.

Strong winds – Non-thunderstorm wind gusts up to 50 mph possible, with the highest impact for coastal counties.

Coastal Impacts – Strong winds and elevated water levels could produce minor coastal flooding, especially along the immediate coast south of Cape Hatteras, and along the north and west shores of the Pamlico Sound and nearby tributaries.

Marine Impacts – Gale force wind gusts for coastal waters and inland sounds. 10-15 foot waves for coastal waters.
