A local resident is currently using faith, positivity, and a passion for UFC to combat an ongoing health battle. 
Recently, Jody of Beach 104 sat down with Currituck resident Johnny Outlaw who opened up about his battle with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma that was initially diagnosed in early 2022. Outlaw would go through a total of twelve treatments at the time which he says usually cures about 88% of individuals.
At the start of 2023, PET scans initially showed that his first round of chemotherapy had worked, that is until Johnny began experiencing symptoms once again. With the cancer returning, he and his doctors began searching for alternatives.
“Right now I’m going through some treatments, it’s called ICE therapy,” Outlaw explained to listeners. “It’s a chemo treatment that they use to bridge you between your current situation and prepping you for bone marrow transplant.”
Of his persisting battle that has plagued him with chronic fatigue, Johnny notes that persistent faith and positivity are the key to an uplifted spirit.
Outside of spreading awareness in the local community, Johnny Outlaw, a practicing martial artist, is a fan of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighting, which he uses to reach out to public figures one might see inside the ring. While Outlaw was in the hospital, he reached out to social media star turned profession boxer Jake Paul in an attempt to schedule an exhibition fight that would gear awareness to Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
While he has not yet received a response, Outlaw continues to expand his reach to the likes of Dana White, Joe Rogan, Mike Tyson, and other household names in the boxing and wrestling community. “If I could reach the right person that’s recognized in social media and has a huge following, that it would help bring awareness and attention to what I’m trying to do,” Outlaw told Beach 104. “It’s not about me, it’s more about helping the people who don’t have the resources that they need,”
