With Christmas and New Year’s Day both falling on Saturday in 2021, the observed federal holiday will be on Friday, December 24 and December 31.
The holiday for State of North Carolina employees and most local governments is observed on December 23, 24 and 27, according to the N.C. Office of State Human Resources.
That means there will be modified office operations in the days leading up to both holidays, along with changes to trash collection schedules and other operations in the days leading up to the holidays.
Dare County
All Dare County offices will be closed on Thursday, December 23, 2021; Friday, December 24, 2021; and Monday, December 27, 2021, in observance of the Christmas holiday. County offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021.
The Dare County C&D Landfill, Buxton Transfer Station and Manteo Recycle Yard will be closed on Thursday, December 23, 2021; Friday, December 24, 2021; and Saturday, December 25, 2021, in observance of the Christmas holiday. These sites will reopen on Monday, December 27, 2021.
Dare County Public Works, which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk, has announced its revised collection schedule in observance of the 2021 Christmas holiday as follows.
There will be one residential trash collection pickup per area the week of Christmas, which runs from Monday, December 20, 2021, through Friday, December 24, 2021. Residential trash collection for the week of December 20, 2021, through December 24, 2021, will be as follows:
- Monday, December 20, 2021: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. (Trash collection will resume on Monday, December 27.)
- Tuesday, December 21, 2021: Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon. (Trash collection will resume on Tuesday, December 28.)
- Wednesday, December 22, 2021: No residential trash collection.
- Thursday, December 23, 2021: Closed – no trash collection.
- Friday, December 24, 2021: Closed – no trash collection. Merry Christmas!
Commercial trash collection will take place on Monday, December 20, 2021, and Thursday, December 23, 2021. Trash collection will resume on Monday, December 27, 2021.
New Years Holiday Trash Collection Changes
All Dare County offices will be closed on Friday, December 31, 2021, in observance of the New Years holiday. County offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Town of Manteo
The Town of Manteo Administrative Offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 22nd, Thursday, December 23rd, and Friday, December 24th in observance of the Christmas holiday. All solid waste pickup will be done on Monday, December 20th and Wednesday, December 22nd.
The Town Hall Offices will also be closed on Friday, December 31, 2021 in observance of the New Year holiday.
Town of Nags Head
All Town of Nags Head administrative offices will be closed Thursday, December 23 through Monday, December 27 and Friday, December 31.

Town of Kill Devil Hills
In observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the town will have office closures and changes to our refuse collection schedule.
During the holiday weeks, residential collection of recyclables by Bay Disposal will be made on normal recyclable collection days; Mondays for the East Side and Tuesdays for the West Side.
Town of Kitty Hawk
In observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays, Town offices will be closed on Friday, December 24, Monday, December 27 and Monday, January 3. Offices will be open regular hours other days during the week.
The Town of Kitty Hawk will have one trash collection the week before the Christmas Holiday. Collection will take place on Monday, December 20. The week after Christmas, trash collection will take place Monday, December 27 and Wednesday, December 29.
Commercial trash collection will take place on Monday, December 20th and Thursday, December 23rd and again on Monday, December 27 and Thursday, December 30.
Regular collection schedules will resume on Monday, January 3.
Town of Southern Shores
Town Hall Offices will be closed for Christmas FRI. DEC. 24th, MON & TUES. DEC 27-28. Town Hall will reopen WED. DEC. 29th.
In observance of New Year’s Day, Town Hall Offices will be closed MON. JAN. 3rd . Town Hall will reopen TUES. JAN. 4th.
