Nationwide threat to schools is being taken seriously by local officials


School systems around the region say they are aware of the alleged threat of violence circulating nationwide on TikTok, and do not consider them credible.

An anonymous threat against schools that is being shared on social media outlets such as TikTok declaring Friday, Dec. 17, as “American School Shooting Day” on the last day of classes before Christmas for many school systems around the country.

Dare County Schools emailed a statement to parents Friday morning:

We are aware of the latest TikTok challenge circulating on social media and being widely reported by national news outlets. While there have not been any threats communicated towards Dare County Schools as a result of this trend, we take threats very seriously. Each of our schools has a full-time School Resource Officer, and we work directly with law enforcement to ensure that our campuses remain safe.
