N.C. 12 closed on Hatteras Island until Monday due to flooding

Overwash flooding due to a high winds and astronomical tides will keep N.C. 12 closed on Hatteras Island through Monday, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The closure starts at the Marc Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet.

A strong nor’easter with wind gusts up to 60 mph is expected to continue blowing along the Outer Banks through Tuesday and has already caused serious flooding in Rodanthe and Buxton. A coastal flood warning remains in effect on the Outer Banks through 1 p.m. Tuesday, as does a high surf advisory. A high wind advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. tonight.

Due to adverse weather conditions, Dare County Public Works will not collect residential or commercial trash in the Town of Kitty Hawk or the unincorporated areas of Dare County on Monday.

The new schedule will be as follows as long as conditions improve enough to allow trash collection to resume on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

  • Tuesday, November 9, 2021, and Thursday, November 11, 2021—Residential collection will take place in Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.
  • Wednesday, November 10, 2021, and Friday, November 12, 2021—Residential collection will take place in Manteo, Wanchese, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon.
  • Commercial trash collection will take place countywide on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, and Friday, November 12, 2021.

Please keep all trash cans secured and put them out the night before your anticipated collection day.
