Crews searching Alligator River after report of overdue private helicopter

Authorities are searching the Alligator River and surrounding waters following the report of a private helicopter that did not arrive as expected to the Dare County Regional Airport.

According to U.S. Coast Guard Public Affairs, they were contacted by a friend of someone on board a helicopter traveling from the Mecklenburg/Brunswick Regional Airport near Broadnax, Virginia did not check-in that they had arrived at the airport on Roanoke Island Monday evening.

Air and boat crews from Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City, along with state and local first responders, have been searching the Albemarle Sound and Alligator River since Tuesday morning.
