A refrigerated truck hauling seafood overturned Tuesday morning on U.S. 158 in lower Currituck County, spilling thousands of pounds of fish on the pavement.

The crash happened between Macedonia Church Road and Grandy around 7 a.m. Boxes of fish were scatted across the pavement, and kept the road shut down for around four hours as the wreck was cleared.

The wreck is under investigation by the N.C. Highway Patrol. Other details were not yet available.

The shutdown led to a crush of traffic along two-lane Poplar Branch and Aydlett roads to get around the scene, and there were reports of minor crashes or vehicles that ended up in ditches.
