We have lost our Hero. William Noah Walker, 68, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Sunday, April 4, 2021.

Our patriarch, a great husband, a great father, an amazing Grandpa, a brother, an uncle, a friend, truly a fine man. A man who knew how to give a great hug. An old school cop, a man who mentored many and helped a lot of kids along the way. Spending many years involved in Babe Ruth Baseball working with the kids. Although he didn’t know much about baseball, he knew about people. He had a gentle presence but a powerful soul. He was kind, he was generous, he was handy. Just look at that dump truck load of tupelo gum he was going to carve decoys out of. Stephanie always told Bill if he ever left her with that pile of wood, she would cuss him every time she had to move a piece of it. Well Bill Walker, “you’ve got a cussing comin”.

He loved spending hours in his shop creating special pieces and gifts for those he loved. “It’s close enough” he would always say as Stephanie looked over his shoulder to offer her unwanted advice. He loved feeding the birds and listening to them sing as he drank his coffee every morning on the porch. A neighbor remarked on the deafening silence as Bill left home for the final time. Guess the universe was quite stunned too. He didn’t much like squirrels.

Bill loved to fish, to hunt, to propagate plants, to watch the grass grow, to watch the water fly, to turn his back yard into an inviting place to entertain friends with roasted oysters and his “Bill’s almost famous brisket”.

He loved country music and he loved Jack Daniels number 7. He loved the Star Bangled Banner and the American Flag and Taps. He loved Stephanie. He loved his family with a love so powerful it was palpable. He was proud. Proud of their boys, Will, Daniel, and Joseph and their soulmates Becky, Denise, and Katy Jo. He was completely and totally wrapped by their eight grandchildren, Jackson, Baylee, Adam, Eloise, Maddie Gail, Presley, Hazel, and Baby Joe. He was a man who beamed with pride when he spoke of his family. He was happy to include Charlotte and Jerry as family too. He knew the future was made possible by the past.

Bill was a brother too. Jimmy and Bonnie, Chuck and Patty also know that endless love that was Bill. The Golliday’s, Stu, Nancy, Jacob, Jay and Luke, they knew that love too. His nieces, Windy, Amy and Elizabeth always knew the love of their Uncle Bill.

He was a quiet man, a gracious man, a forgiving man. He was a solid friend to all who had the pleasure to know him. He was a mentor to his brothers in blue. They never doubted he had their six. He loved “walking the beat” and he loved saying “pretty work” for a job well done. He loved making people smile.

He was our rock, he was Stephanie’s soul mate, other half, and better half.

Bill left us all too soon in the quiet hours of Easter morning. Falling asleep in his favorite place on the sofa after a most perfect Saturday evening spent with a bourbon and some country music and his wife Stephanie. He had plans for Sunday, but I guess God had a plan too. He left us too soon, they say the good ones always do.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the Family Recreation Park Softball Field in Kill Devil Hills. Parking is available at the recreation park or First Flight Elementary School.
