Wet weather, including a nor’easter, forecast for the Outer Banks this week

A pair of weather systems are expected to bring wet conditions for much of this week to the Outer Banks, with a strong coastal storm to sweep through Wednesday night and Thursday that might even produce a few snow flakes.

A warm front will lift north across the area today into tonight as strong low pressure passes by well to the west, according to forecasters at the Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service.

That will produce periods of rain and fog the rest of Monday and into Tuesday, with the possibility of a few thunderstorms mixed in as well.

High pressure over the area Tuesday into early Wednesday will offer a brief respite, before a strong coastal storm impacts the area late Wednesday into Thursday.

The main impacts will be strong coastal winds to gale force Thursday into Thursday night, widespread rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning, forecasters said.

The rain will likely mix with or briefly change to light snow mainly north of Highway 264 late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, but significant accumulations are not expected at this point.

The strong winds could also produce minor coastal flooding from Buxton south to Ocracoke along the Pamlico Sound into Thursday night, with water level rises of 1 to 2 feet above ground a possibility.

High pressure will then build over the area Friday and Saturday, with a cold weekend expected.
