Photographer Brian Van Druten recently captured photos of a bobcat atop a utility poll on Bodie Island.
Not long after climbing to the top of the pole, the bobcat was seen shimmying backwards back down before successfully leaping from the pole to the ground, Cape Hatteras National Seashore said in the latest edition of its Cape Chronicle newsletter.
Bobcats are notoriously elusive, but common throughout North Carolina. They are active year-round and tend to be most active around dawn and dusk. Bobcats are solitary except during the breeding season, which usually occurs during February or March, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
