VIDEO: Dare County crosses 1,200 threshold of COVID-19 cases among residents

The Dare County Department of Health and Human Services announced 27 new positive tests for COVID-19 on Tuesday, with the total number of residents that have been diagnosed with the coronavirus now at 1,206.

269 new cases of the virus were recorded over the last seven days, with 226 showing symptoms and 218 acquiring the virus by direct contact with someone else that was also positive, according to DHHS Director Sheila Davies.

Dare County set a single day record for positive tests on Saturday with 73 new cases.

“As anticipated much of the rise in recent cases is connected to gatherings of co-workers, families and friends around the Christmas holiday,” Davies said.

“We have seen a marked increase in the percent positivity rate,” Davies said. “For the past week alone, the percent of positive tests to total tests for COVID-19 was 14.9 percent.”

Since mid-March, the county’s health department has recorded a total of 1,829 infections among residents and non-residents, along with six deaths of Dare County residents.

Of the 183 active resident cases, ten people were hospitalized with the virus and the rest were in home isolation as of Tuesday’s update at DareNC.gov/COVID19.

Eleven people were listed as presumed recovered, seven residents and four non-residents, on Tuesday, bringing the total number of those that are either recovered or asymptomatically cleared to 1,480.
