Several Currituck County Fire-EMS personnel executed a successful water rescue earlier this month off Corolla, thanks in part to a cooperative training effort with Corolla Beach Rescue.

On Oct. 13, members of the Currituck County Fire-EMS at Station 6 were dispatched after reports of a pair of swimmers caught in a rip current were in distress near the Dolphin Street beach access in Whalehead.

Lt. Michael Lane and firefighter/parmedics Trey Crawford and Cody Cornelius responded.

Lane entered the ocean, and with assistance the his crewmates and a member of Corolla Beach Rescue, retrieved the victim from 200 yards offshore and brought him to shore safely.

This was the first incident in Currituck County since the training program’s inception two years ago with a successful outcome, according to a post on the Currituck County Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4633 Facebook page.

“It was a team effort all the way around, from FF/P Cornelius’ spotting, FF/P Crawford’s’ handling of command and the arrival of Corolla Beach Rescue, it was an overwhelming success,” said Lane, who in his off-duty time is also a local high school football and basketball official.
