For a short time Monday, five tropical cyclones swirled in the Atlantic basin, tying a record last set in September 1971, the National Hurricane Center said.
The storms were Hurricane Paulette, located north of Bermuda; Tropical Depression Rene, located over the central Atlantic; Hurricane Sally, centered over the north-central Gulf of Mexico; Tropical Storm Teddy, located over the east-central tropical Atlantic and Tropical Storm Vicky, located over the eastern tropical Atlantic. By 5 p.m., Rene had dissipated into remnants of her former self.
The 2020 hurricane season began early and has been breaking records since with earliest-in-history named storms. There’s just one name left, Winifred, before the NHC will have exhausted this season’s names and will have to turn to the Greek alphabet.
