Following Labor Day, Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue typically removes lifeguard stands from the beaches and keeps watch with roving patrols.

But with increased post-season visitors expected this year, the Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue is extending lifeguard services until Oct. 15 at the following beach accesses: Hayman Boulevard, 5th Street, 2nd Street, Ocean Bay Boulevard, and Neptune Drive.

In Kitty Hawk, two roving ocean rescue guards and a supervisor will be on duty beginning after Labor Day and until the end of September, or longer depending on beach usage.

The town will also leave up lifeguard stands at the Kitty Hawk’s most widely used beach accesses: Byrd Street and the Kitty Hawk Bath House.

In the event of heavy beach usage, the roving supervisor will flex staff up to cover one or both of the remaining guard stands as well as identify other areas of coverage when the need arises, the town said.

Earlier this week, Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced it would continue staffing lifeguard beaches through Sept. 30 due to anticipated higher visitation after Labor Day.
