An area of low pressure located about 150 miles south-southeast of Wilmington this morning is expected to become a tropical depression within a day or so, the National Hurricane Center said.
The system will remain offshore of the southeastern coast of the United States and away from land, but it is bringing a high risk of rip currents from Cape Lookout to Oregon Inlet today, including Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village, Avon and Ocracoke. A moderate risk of rip currents is expected north of Oregon Inlet.
The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City forecast office is keeping an eye on the developing low-pressure system offshore, and expects some scattered showers and storms to the south.
An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon if necessary.
