Manteo man killed in bridge accident remembered as dedicated family man, firefighter

Steven Bailey

A funeral service will be held Monday for Steven “Bull” Roy Bailey, 42, who died in a construction accident Monday on the ‘Jug Handle Bridge’ project in Rodanthe.

Bailey, a master mechanic working for Flatiron Corp., the main contractor for the new span bridge carrying N.C. 12 over the Pamlico Sound,  was fatally injured after being pinned by a crane, authorities said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

In an obituary, Bailey is remembered as a dedicated and loyal father of three and volunteer with the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department.

“An avid do-it-yourselfer, Bull also enjoyed fishing. Most importantly, he loved his family and was a wonderful husband and father,” the obituary reads.

Bailey is survived by his wife, three children, his parents, brother and a niece and nephew.
