After first looking like a bong, then wearing a cape, Bobby Boucher would be most pleased to hear that Kill Devil Hills announced Monday the town’s new 400,000 gallon tank is now putting out high-quality H2O.
Kill Devil Hills Public Services staff, as well as crews from Landmark Structures and Hatchell Concrete, have been busier than usual over the last several weeks preparing the town’s new water tower next to the fire station for operation.
Before filling the 400,000-gallon bowl, it was disinfected to ensure high-quality water in the 160-foot-tall tower. After being sanitized, crews began to fill the tank was connected taking less than a day to complete the job.
Once filled, a water sample was collected and tested for quality assurance. The passing sample was also approved for quality by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
It is anticipated that the deconstruction of the 56-year-old water tower will occur sometime in the fall. Before demolition will begin, cellular antennas from the old tank must be removed and placed on top of the new tank. The new 180-foot monopole cell tower is also nearing completion.
