The Atlantic Ocean claimed a beach house near Rodanthe on Hatteras Island last night, leaving a debris field along the beach and forcing the evacuation of nearby vacation rental homes.

Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue posted a series of photos from the scene overnight:

“The debris field stretches from Sea Oats (Liberty gas station) through [the] S-turns,” Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue said in a Facebook post. “Be careful of boards with nails and other hazards littering the water and shoreline. There are also compromised septic tanks in the water. Water activities are not advised in the area of N Rodanthe.”

Photos from this morning posted on social media show at least one cottage destroyed and several others in peril.
