The Corolla Wild Horse Fund has named the Outer Banks’ newest wild foal, born May 18 during Tropical Storm Arthur, in honor of a 9-year-old Nags Head Elementary School student who died in a house fire with his mom earlier this month.

Though the CWHF, which cares for the herd of about 100 wild mustangs living on the Currituck Outer Banks, had decided to give this year’s foals “A” names, caretakers made an exception with the latest little guy.

The newest member of the herd is named Sebastian, in honor and memory of Sebastian (Sebi) Antonio Lopez, who died with his mom Ravann Rachelle Horton the day before the colt.

“Sebi and his mom Ravann were well-loved members of our community and Sebi was a part of the Mustang Outreach Program,” which offer music lessons and mentorship to Dare County youth, CWHF herd manager Meg Puckett said in a Facebook post. “We hope this small gesture brings a bit of joy and comfort to their friends and family. Sebi’s legacy will remain a part of this beach for many, many generations to come.”

“Light and love to everyone – we could all use it right now,” Puckett wrote.
