Two rounds of severe weather possible tonight into Monday morning

The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City forecast office is calling for two rounds of potentially severe weather this afternoon into Monday.

First, isolated thunderstorms with a slight chance for a few to become severe will sweep across eastern North Carolina this afternoon into this evening.

Main threats will be damaging winds and heavy downpours, but a brief tornado can’t be ruled out, the weather service said.

Then tonight around midnight and through Monday morning, a complex low pressure system will approach, bring widespread showers and thunderstorms. The main threats, again, will be damaging winds, localized flooding and isolated tornadoes possible.

“Overnight storms pose a bigger danger,” the weather service said. “Make sure you have a way to receive warnings when you are asleep!”
