The residents of Ocracoke Island are reeling from the loss of 4-year-old Zoe Ramirez-Ramirez, who died unexpectedly on Feb. 29.
The North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released any information on a possible cause of death, but reports from the community indicate Zoe was being treated for the flu, said Hyde County spokesman Donnie Shumate.
The little girl, who was looking forward to starting kindergarten in the fall, loved dancing, singing, playing hide and seek with her parents and going to the playground, swinging and sliding down the slide, according to her obituary.
“Using her wonderful imagination, Zoe was often a doctor making her aunts and parents her patients. Her favorite colors were pink and purple, and her favorite candy was gum and anything chocolate,” her obituary reads. “Zoe greeted everyone with a smile. She never forgot to remind her parents and aunts how much she loved them.”
Born on Feb. 19, 2016, Zoe was the daughter of Maritza Ramírez and Luis Ramírez of Ocracoke.
Donations are being collected to help the family with funeral expenses. There is a donation box at the family’s home at 59 Lighthouse Road and a donation account has been set up at First National Bank in Ocracoke.
Cards or donations may also be mailed to PO Box 376 Ocracoke, NC 27960.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Lifesaving Church – Ocracoke Assembly of God. Zoe’s parents ask anyone planning to attend to wear her favorite colors of pink, purple or white.
